What is an Eye Bank?
 
The eye bank is a nonprofit organization and obtains, medically evaluates and distributes eye, which are donated by humanitarian minded citizens for use in corneal transplants, scleral reconstruction, research and education.
Who can donate eyes?
 
Virtually anyone and everyone
Age & Sex doesn’t matter. Eyes of deceased can be donated irrespective of Age/Sex.
Spectacle wearers, diabetics, hypertensives, asthmatics, tuberculosis, cancer patients can also donate eyes.
Patients who have undergone eye surgery can also donate eyes
All religions endorse the practice of eye donation
Even people who haven’t previously pledged can also donate their eyes.
Why should eyes be donated?
  Donated human eyes and corneal tissue are necessary for the preservation and restoration of sight and are used for transplantation, research and education.
What is Cornea?
 
The Cornea is the Clear surface of the front of the eye and is the main focusing element. Should the cornea become cloudy from disease, injury, infection or any other cause, vision will be drastically reduced.
What is a cornea transplant?
  The cornea transplant is the surgical procedure, which replaces a disc-shaped segment of an impaired cornea with a similarly shaped piece of a healthy donor cornea. More than 90 percent of cornea transplant operations successfully restore the recipient’s vision.
Will eye donation affect the appearance of the donor?
 
No. Great care is taken to preserve the appearance of the donor. No one will be able to see that anything has been done. The procedure doesn’t disfigure or leave scars. In fact the relatives will not know the eyes have been removed till you tell them!!!
Will the donor’s family pay or receive any fees?
 
Donated eyes are never bought or sold. It is illegal to buy and sell human eyes, organs and tissues. Any costs associated with eye procurement or with the transplant.

Yes, a dedicated line is available for 24 hours service.
 
  Family members of the deceased persons can contact this phone number to donate the eyes of the deceased persons.
How soon eyes should be removed?
 
The sooner, the better
Preferably within 6 hours of death.
How can I become a donor?
 
The most important action you can take to ensure you will be a donor is to tell your family and legal representative. Most states now require that families be offered the option of donation when a loved one dies. Families may give consent for donation. It is most helpful if they know how you feel in advance. A donor card can serve as an indication to your family, your legal representative and hospitals of your intention to be an eye donor.
 
FORTUNATELY lost sight can be restored through surgical intervention of corneal transplantation through donated eyes
What do we do at the site?
 
The Eye Bank personnel with a doctor or trained technician visits the donors home.
The eyes are removed by a trained person using sterile procedure
10 cc of blood sample is collected from the donor for testing
The socket is filled with cotton or with artificial eyes

Optic nerve is cut and globe removed

Will the eye bank reveal the information of the recipient?
 
The recipient of corneal will always remain anonymous but the donor family should be satisfied knowing that the eyes have been used to restore the vision of two blind persons.
