CATARACT

What causes cataract?
Cataract development is a normal process of ageing, but cataracts also develop from eye injuries, certain diseases or medications. Your genes may also play a role in cataract development.

What are the common symptoms of Cataract?
In the early stages, only a doctor can detect a cataract because there may not be any symptoms.  When you do start to notice changes in vision, they may include:

Cloudy or blurry vision, especially outdoors.
Streaks or rays of light seeming to come from headlights and stop lights; Difficulty in driving especially at night.
Instinctively shading your eyes from the sun or feeling more comfortable wearing a visor; Sensitivity to bright lamps or sunlight.
Print appearing faded and lacking in contrast and frequent changes in eyeglass prescription.
Change in one’s perception of colors. Colors appearing faded or changed in hue.  Blue may appear to be green and yellow may look white.
You have a growth on the eyelid or the eyelid is incorrectly positioned.
You fall under the high risk group like Glaucoma (especially 40 years of age), Diabetes, High myopia (extreme near sightedness), Eye injury, Recurrent eye infections or prior intraocular inflammation.
Because these may also be symptoms of other eye conditions, it is important to see your eye doctor annually, or whenever you notice a persistent change in vision.
