Will I feel anything during surgery? |
| |
In Nethradhama, we use topical anaesthesia before cataract surgery that numb the eye. Most patients feel only gentle pressure. |
 |
What do I see during surgery? |
| |
Most patients only see the bright lights of the microscope. |
 |
How soon may I leave after surgery? |
| |
Most patients may leave within a few hours after the surgery |
 |
How soon after the phaco surgery, will I able to see? |
| |
In most cases, the patient is able to see almost immediately following the surgery, although some patients experience clear vision after one or two days. |
 |
Will I need glasses after phaco surgery? |
| |
You may need to wear glasses only to fine-tune your vision. These spectacles have normal lenses unlike thick lenses used in the past. If unifocal IOL is used, near vision glasses are almost always required. |
 |
Will activities have to be restricted after phaco surgery? |
| |
Normal activities including walking, reading, writing, watching television etc. may be resumed soon after the surgery. However, during the first week after the surgery, it is better to avoid strenuous activities and avoid exposing the eye to water or dust. |
 |
Is there any diet restriction after phaco surgery? |
| |
There are absolutely no diet restrictions after phaco and you can continue with your normal diet. However, diet regulation advised for other diseases like Diabetes, High Blood pressure, etc must continue. |
 |
Can I have phaco surgery on one eye even if the other eye had been operated upon using the conventional cataract surgery? |
| |
Yes, you may have micro incision phaco surgery on your “second eye” provided there is no specific contraindication for Phaco. |
 |
What is Multifocal IOL? |
| |
The latest multifocal IOL are designed to provide good distance vision, intermediate and near vision. They reduce the patient’s dependence on glasses for routine activities. Unlike conventional IOL, it has multiple zones of different focal lengths that bring everything from near to far into clear focus. These lenses can be used only for suitable patients. |
 |
Was laser used to remove my Cataract? |
| |
Your cataract was removed by Ultrasound, not laser. In a process called phacoemulsification, sound waves gently break up the cataract and it is removed from the eye. Many people call this as laser cataract surgery which is a misnomer. |
 |
I see great at a distance, but why can’t I read without glasses? |
| |
Your implant is a single-focus lens. If your lens was chosen for distance vision, you will need reading glasses for close range work. Some patients elect to have one eye focused for close vision so they can read without glasses. However, this may compromise distance vision. Patients who require precise distance vision do best with both eyes focused for distance and reading glasses for near.

 |
I saw huge halos around the lights after surgery. What causes this? |
| |
This dramatic glare was due to the fact that your pupil was still dilated from the surgery. After the dilation wears off, your vision will return to normal.
|
 |
May I drive myself home? |
| |
It is not recommended, although some patients who see well out of their other eye and have not had any medication may drive.
|
 |
How long will my implant last? |
| |
The intraocular lens is placed permanently in your eye and will not “wear out”. |
 |
Can my eye reject the lens implant? |
| |
No, since the intraocular lens is not human tissue, your body cannot reject it. |
 |
Why should I wear protective goggles after cataract surgery? |
| |
Excessive light may be harmful to the retina after cataract surgery. This is because the natural lens has been removed and ultraviolet (UV) light is now focused on the macula through the plastic implant. The lens of the eye protects the retina by absorbing specific wavelengths of ultraviolet light and by focusing visible wavelengths onto the retina. Although the implant lens contains ultraviolet blocking agents, it doesn't provide the same degree of protection to the macula as the natural lens. Moreover the goggles protects the eyes from dust and pollution. |
