A Tour To An Eye Camp
 
Organising camp: Eye camps are conducted in sponsorship with a local community service organisation which sponsors the camp. The camp organiser co-ordinates for the publicity of the camp with the sponsors. The camp organiser visits the site about one week before the scheduled date to oversee the arrangements and to discuss with the sponsor, strategies to ensure the smooth conduct of the eye camp.
 

Step 1: Patient Registration: The camp team, composed of ophthalmologists, optometrists and paramedical staff, proceed to the screening area or campsite. With support from camp sponsors, local volunteers record the patient details: name,age, address- in the OP register and case sheet. Patients are given ID Card which may be used for any future follow-up.

Step 2: Preliminary vision testing: Preliminary vision testing is performed by ophthalmic assistants. Vision charts, such as the Snellen and E type charts are used.

Step 3: Preliminary diagnostic examination: Patients above the age of 40 have their intraocular pressure tested. Doctors perform the preliminary examination. Clinical conditions such as external eye infections, vision loss caused by nutritional deficiency and the incurably blind are examined.

Step 4: Refraction: Refraction is performed on patients who exhibit refractive errors, presbyopia, outdated glasses or aphakia. Well trained optometrists refract while volunteers control the patient flow.

Step 5: Blood pressure and Urine Sugar: Paramedical staff check the patients blood pressure and urine sugar which confirms their surgery fitness status if they are willing to undergo surgery

Step 6: Final examination: Doctors evaluate the test findings, perform the final examination, review the patient records, make the final diagnosis and prescribe treatment. Patients advised for surgery are motivated to undergo surgery at the hospital.
Step 7: Inpatient registration: Patients counselled at the campsite are registered in IP register and transported to the base hospital for surgery.
Step 8: Preparation for Surgery: Patients brought from the Camp site to the hospital are prepared for surgery for the next day. Keratometry, Biometric measurements, slit lamp examinations are done. Patients eyelashes are cut and dilating drops are instilled

Step 9: Local Anesthesia: Patients are given block ie local anesthesia before the cataract extraction.

Step 10: Small incision Cataract surgery: A Cataract operation is performed under local anaesthesia. A incision is made in the eye. The clouded lens is removed and intraocular lens is implanted. The incision is closed.

Step 11: Post operative Care: Patients are given Post operative instructions to be followed and given a date for follow up checkup.

 
 
Step 12: Patients are given free meals and round trip transportation also free of cost.
